Pio de Jesus Pico (1801-1894), was of African, Native American, Hispanic and European Ancestry. He rose from poverty and became the last governor of Mexican California. A strong beleiver in racial tolerance and the greatness of Southern California, Pico became a member of the Los Angeles city council after independence.
